A gray, peeling deck is one of the most common things we see. Before you buy a gallon of anything, here is how to choose between stain and paint.
How Stain Works
Stain soaks into the wood instead of sitting on top. It wears down gradually, so recoating is easier and it rarely peels. Semi transparent stain lets the wood grain show through.
How Paint and Solid Stain Work
Paint and solid stain form a film on top of the wood. They hide more and come in any color, but on walking surfaces they can peel when water gets under the film.
What We Usually Recommend
For deck floors, a penetrating stain is usually the easier long term choice. Railings, skirting and porch floors under a roof are good places for solid color.
Peeling Decks Need Stripping
Putting new stain over old peeling coating does not work. The loose coating has to be scraped, stripped and sanded first so the new finish can reach the wood.
How Often To Recoat
In Georgia, plan on refreshing a deck every two to three years. We can look at your deck and tell you what it needs.
